Emotionally Based School Avoidance

Strategy Bank:
School Related Factors To Affect Change

from Dr Jerricah Holder

This is part of a series of Strategy Banks (others include CYP level and Family level strategies).

Below, Jerricah shares with us an overview of strategies at the school level, with particular attention towards strengthening the child’s sense of belonging and connection at school and increasing confidence towards school-attendance through environmental changes and provision of additional support.

Within our work, the best interventions and strategies often come through a consultative approach with teachers and parents; giving us the chance to specify, adapt and modify suited to the individual profile and ecological contexts. Having the strategy banks and understanding the psychological principals from them through Jerricah’s EBSA Horizons course has been hugely valuable to us, and led to consistently positive outcomes for EBSA within our work.

Please feel free to share this (and any of these resources) with colleagues – we’re keen to support EPs to have the knowledge and skills to not only improve our practice and outcomes for CYP experiencing EBSA, but to change the systemic narrative and understanding around it.

EBSA Horizons Online CPD

We’re delighted that more than 900 EPs have joined Jerricah’s, EBSA Horizons CPD course. Hearing how the knowledge, skills and resources from this has improved outcomes for CYP, and the systemic initiatives that aim to improve outcomes across Local Authorities has been remarkable to hear.

The course covers a detailed understanding of how EBSA emerges and is maintained, models of intervention, and strategies for working at the levels of the child, home, and across school.
